In late February 2024, students from Shelyn Elementary School found themselves at the Tzu Chi Walnut Campus Life Science Garden for a memorable ecological tour of the farm’s varied vegetation that both educated and inspired them in environmental protection.
On December 7, 2022, at the invitation of Shelyn Elementary School of Rowland Unified School District, the Tzu Chi Education team brought a fun-filled environmental education class to the school.
In October 2022, Tzu Chi Elementary School, Walnut, California, and Tzu Chi Life Science Farm collaborated to teach students the Tzu Chi philosophy of “Knowing, Cherishing, and then Creating Blessings” by combining character education and organic farming.
Tzu Chi Elementary School in Walnut, California, organized a clothes recycling drive from October 10 to 21, 2022. Everyone, from teachers, parents, and students, did their best to cooperate, with 109 people participating. In the spirit of “cherishing things and blessings,” families donated their unwanted clothes and shoes to give them a second life when people in need in the community received them. The drive seamlessly combined charity with environmental protection through recycling second-hand yet still valuable goods. A total of 250 bags of donated clothing were collected and delivered to a charity distribution site.
Because of the pandemic’s impact, most public school districts in Los Angeles County arrange for parents to attend online “start of the semester” briefings. However, after careful consideration, Tzu Chi educators offered a “Back to School Night” in person to reassure parents of their many school safety measures and precautions.

Through the Tzu Chi Education Foundation, students of Tzu Chi Walnut Elementary School and Tzu Chi Great Love Preschool Walnut, participated in the yearly Great Kindness Challenge to learn the importance of kindness and perform the Tzu Chi “Go Green Pledge” for an eco-friendly future.
Tzu Chi Great Love Preschool, Walnut, California, and Tzu Chi Great Love Preschool, Monrovia, California, held activities as part of the 2023-2024 Great Kindness Challenge, during which children learned to express their gratitude, to be kind to others, and to protect the earth.
Tzu Chi Education Foundation designed a unique Compassionate Vegetarian Plan around the theme of “friends not animals” for the 2023 “Great Kindness Challenge” to promote vegetarianism with tens of millions of teachers and students in more than 30,000 schools around the world.
On October 28, 2022, a special Halloween event, “Environmental Protection and No Tricks,” was held at Tzu Chi Elementary School, Great Love Preschool Walnut, and Great Love Preschool Monrovia. The students, teachers, and parents participated in the fun and educational holiday event.
