In early 2025, the Eaton Fire broke out in Los Angeles and devastated multiple neighborhoods. Seven-year-old Elaine and her family were forced to evacuate their home and moved seven times within a month of the disaster. Before their lives had even settled down, the issue of the children’s education became a new challenge for the family. After enrolling at Tzu Chi Elementary School Walnut, Elaine not only gained a stable learning environment but also regained a sense of security and self-confidence with the support of the faculty. This journey from disaster to hope bears witness to the power that education brings in the face of adversity.
Seven Moves After the Disaster
Before the Eaton Fire, Elaine’s family had just moved to Pasadena, California, and was gradually adjusting to life in their new community and at school. However, the sudden fire disrupted everything, forcing the family to leave their home once again.
“At the time, we had absolutely no idea where we’d end up next,” recalls Elaine’s mother, Annie.
In search of a place to stay, the family moved seven times in less than a month, shuttling back and forth between Los Angeles County and Riverside County, all in the hope of finding a temporary shelter. Eventually, they found a temporary home in Walnut. However, even though they had secured a place to live, a new challenge arose: finding a suitable school for their daughter.
A Ray of Hope in the School Search
Elaine’s parents hoped their daughter could continue receiving a bilingual education in both Chinese and English and learn in a safe and supportive environment. To achieve that, they searched far and wide for a suitable school. However, for a family that had just experienced a fire and suffered significant financial losses, a private bilingual school seemed out of reach.
“We knew Tzu Chi Elementary School Walnut was a private school, so it wasn’t on our radar at first,” Annie admitted. “At the time, we thought there was no way we could afford it”.
The couple visited several schools, waiting time and again only to be disappointed time and again, they couldn’t find a school that would accept Elaine. “At that time, our greatest wish was simply for our child to have a school to attend,” Annie recalled, unable to hide her emotion when thinking back on those days.
Determined to give it one more try, Annie decided to visit one more school. Unexpectedly, the moment she stepped into Tzu Chi Elementary School Walnut, she knew she had found the answer. “After the tour, I immediately realized this was the school we wanted Elaine to attend.”
During her first conversation with Principal Benjamin Tsao, his sincerity encouraged Annie to openly share her family’s situation. She admitted that while she desperately wanted her daughter to receive the best education, the tuition fees were simply beyond what the family could afford.
After learning about the family’s circumstances, Tzu Chi Elementary School Walnut decided to lend a helping hand, allowing Elaine to enroll without difficulty.

Tzu Chi Elementary Brings Smiles Back
When she first transferred to Tzu Chi Elementary School, Elaine was anxious and nervous in the aftermath of the disaster. The teachers understood everything she had been through, carefully attended to her emotional needs, and offered her love, patience, and encouragement.
With the support of her teachers, Elaine gradually let down her guard against the unfamiliar environment. She began to speak up and interact with her classmates, rebuilding her sense of security step by step.
The teachers found Elaine a thoughtful, diligent, and hardworking child. She gradually demonstrated a strong sense of responsibility, becoming the most reliable big sister to her two-and-a-half-year-old younger sister. She began caring for her friends, took the initiative to help her classmates, and bravely tried things she had previously feared. Even though she used to be very picky with food, she was now willing to try new foods.
“I never imagined that one day she would enjoy eating tofu and other healthy vegetarian dishes,” her mother, Annie, recalled with a smile. The principal once personally sat down with Elaine for lunch, gently encouraging her to try foods she had previously refused to eat.
I have never expected that a principal would care so attentively about a child’s growth.
Academic Excellence
Although this past year remained full of challenges – the family even had to move again due to a significant rent hike by their landlord – Elaine never gave up her efforts, and her academic achievements gradually began to show.
From transferring to Tzu Chi Elementary School in the spring of 2025 to taking the assessment test in the spring of 2026, Elaine made remarkable progress in her Chinese-English bilingual learning. Not only did she rank among the top students in math, but her language and reading skills also improved significantly. She has received the Student of the Month award as well as numerous other honors, and was named one of the school’s Blue Ribbon Students.
Watching their daughter take the stage to accept her awards, her parents’ hearts were filled with gratitude. “Without Tzu Chi’s help, we really wouldn’t have known how to move forward,” said Annie.
Beyond her academic growth, what brings her parents even greater joy are the small changes in Elaine’s daily life. Now, she leads her family in reciting the Chinese pre-meal gratitude prayer she learned at school; while riding in the car, she often softly hums songs from the choir; and after joining the after-school cooking class, she has begun to take the initiative to help with meal preparation, taking pride in being able to prepare food for her family. She has also made good friends at school and rediscovered the smile and joy that belong to a child.
Accompanying Growth with Love
Looking back on this experience, what struck Annie most deeply was that Tzu Chi Elementary School provided her daughter not only with academic progress but also with the support of teachers, who helped her grow academically, socially, emotionally, and in character.
“Tzu Chi’s teachers and staff don’t just impart knowledge to the children; they accompany them on their journey of growth with love,” Annie said. Thanks to this, a child who had lost her sense of security due to a disaster was able to regain her self-confidence and feel loved and accepted.
“When we were going through the most difficult time of our lives, Tzu Chi reached out to help us. I will never forget this kindness,” Annie said gratefully, adding that without the school’s support, the dedication of the teachers, and Master Cheng Yen’s compassionate care, Elaine wouldn’t be who she is today: a child who always smiles and is full of self-confidence.
A devastating fire robbed Elaine’s family of their stable life; while warm companionship allowed a child to shine once again. Elaine’s story is not merely one of post-disaster reconstruction; it is a life lesson about love, companionship, and hope. It also reminds us that the value of education has never been measured solely by grades, but by offering care and companionship when children need it most, helping them regain faith in themselves and courageously step into the future.
